When applied to specific fields of study, comparative politics may be referred to by other names, such as comparative government. Comparative politics is the comparative study of other countries, citizens, different political units either in whole or in part, and analyzes the similarities and differences between those political units. Comparative Politics is one of the oldest fields of political analysis, forming the basis for much of the writings of political philosophers throughout the ages. It was only in the nineteenth century, however, that the comparative method was first formally proposed as a means for elevating political thought to the level of a science.

In the post–Cold War era, our knowledge of democratic, democratizing, and nondemocratic political systems has grown enormously. The methodologies, concepts, and theories of comparative research are widely used by political scientists. The comparative study of politics and government examines political institutions - from constitutions to executives to parliaments to parties to electoral laws - and the processes and relationships that account for stability and change in political economy, culture, conflict, government, rights and public policy.

The Comparative Politics subfield consists of a tightly knit and productive group of faculty and graduate students.
